Acupuncture Treatments
Ideal for pain, muscle spasms and sports
Acupuncture can target problem areas directly instead of applying indirect techniques that can sometimes be uncomfortable...
Acupuncture at the practice is administered by a Chartered Physiotherapist and Member of the British Medical Acupuncture Society.
Interestingly, there are two kinds of acupuncture: Chinese acupuncture and Western Medical Acupuncture.
At our practice you'll always get a thorough western diagnosis - so that's what we base our treatments on. Our acupuncture isn't based on the Eastern concept of 'Qi' (Energy) but rather on the body's physiological responses to acupuncture.
Acupuncture can be used as a stand-alone treatment method if that's what you wish, but is most often used in conjunction with physiotherapy or massage-based treatment.
If you're not sure whether acupuncture could be beneficial to you, then please ask or book for a physiotherapy session and we will treat with the most appropriate methods which may well include acupuncture.
In western medicine, acupuncture is commonly used to deal with "trigger points" - areas that can appear in muscles and cause pain, spasm, and referred pain (away from the true origin). Trigger points in the shoulder area for instance are a common cause of chronic headaches.
A note about the acupuncture needles we use...
We have tried all kinds of manufacturers and types of needle but have now found our favourite! The needles we use are made in Germany and are the best we have yet seen.
The main benefit is that they have a special coating which allow them to be used with far greater comfort compared to others we have tested, which would sometimes cause pain on removal.
Why is acupuncture good for sports people?
There are a few reasons - firstly, muscles are more efficient and stronger when they are free of trigger points, and acupuncture is effective at removing trigger points.
Secondly, acupuncture can deal with isolated muscle problems with often little or no treatment soreness.
Thirdly, many of the muscles which sports people aggravate are quite deep, but can be easily treated with acupuncture.
